Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to improve your fluency in reading Latin prose and poetry and to help you gain a greater knowledge of complex grammatical structures.

What topics will we cover?

We shall read Cicero Select Letters ed Shackleton Bailey (CUP). Contact tutor through the Languages Department for exact starting point. We shall be undertaking a thorough revision of Latin grammar.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-demonstrate an extended knowledge of the use of the subjunctive
-demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of Cicero Letters.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed at least three years of Latin, or have an equivalent level of the language. This course being taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole class work; reading and translating Cicero, tutor posing questions and answering questions raised by the students. General discussion on language, style, theme, background points etc. Students should, if possible, prepare a portion of the text before each class. About 15 minutes will be devoted to grammatical exercises. Homework: about 2-3 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Cicero Select Letters ed Shackleton Bailey (CUP)
North and Hillard Latin Prose Composition (Duckworth).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
