This course incorporates a beginners' group and an intermediate group. The beginners' group is suitable for those new to the language and the intermediate group is suitable for those who wish to develop their speaking and listening skills. To enrol you should have completed module 1 or equivalent.

Course outline

What is the course about?

Students at near beginners level will continue to learn to communicate simply in a range of everyday situations and conversations. Students at intermediate level will further develop their communication skills, with the emphasis on listening and speaking. Both groups will also continue learning about some basic elements of a Celtic culture via the history of the language revival, Cornish place-names, etc.

What topics will we cover?

BEGINNERS
Eating and drinking, asking directions, shopping.
Grammar: all the grammar required by the Cornish Language Board for the Grade 1 Examination, including simple present and present continuous tenses, simple past tense OF AUXILIARY VERBS, imperfect tense of verb TO BE, uses of the verb noun, adverbs, adjectives, pronouns, imperatives, declensions of prepositions, first rules of mutation.

INTERMEDIATES
Asking directions, expressing emotions, writing and replying to letters and invitations. Following instructions, making comparisons.
Further topics will be negotiated with the group of learners.
Grammar: all the grammar required by the Cornish Language Board for the Grade 2 examination, including imperfect and future tenses of 'to be' and imperfect and simple past tenses of the auxiliary verbs and other common verbs, comparison of adjectives, conjunctions, interrogatives, idioms, numbers beyond 100 and second mutation.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

BEGINNERS
- go to the market and to the restaurant

- go shopping

- asking and giving directions

INTERMEDIATES
- give and understand directions in some detail.

- express emotions - complain and apologise.

- write and reply to letters and invitations.

- give and understand simple instructions, eg. Following a recipe.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed module 1 or equivalent.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

Cornish 1: module 3 (LH131), but we recommend you discuss your options with the tutor. Please enrol as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
