Course outline

What is the course about?

Students at near beginners level will continue to learn to communicate simply in a range of everyday situations and conversations. Students at intermediate level will further develop their communication skills, with the emphasis on listening and speaking. Both groups will also continue learning about some basic elements of a Celtic culture via the history of the language revival, Cornish place-names, etc.

What topics will we cover?

BEGINNERS
Discussing and arranging activities for spare time, give commands, talk about events in the past, understand simple Cornish place-names.
Grammar: all the grammar required by the Cornish Language Board for the Grade 1 Examination, including simple present and present continuous tenses, simple past tense of auxiliary verbs, imperfect tense of verb TO BE, uses of the verb noun, adverbs, adjectives, pronouns, imperatives, declensions of prepositions, first rules of mutation.

INTERMEDIATES
Seek information - plan and book a holiday, understand more Cornish place-names.
Grammar: all the grammar required by the Cornish Language Board for the Grade 2 Examination, including imperfect and future tenses of TO BE and imperfect and simple past tenses of auxiliary verbs and other common verbs, comparison of adjectives, conjunctions, interrogatives, idioms, numbers beyond 100 and second mutation.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed module 2 or equivalent. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

At the end of all 3 modules, learners at Level 1 may, if they wish, sit the Grade 1 Examination of Kesva an Taves Kernewek (The Cornish language Board), while learners at Level 2 may sit the Grade 2 Examination. Please discuss with the tutor what course to do next.
