Course outline

What is the course about?

The aim of this course is to strengthen the basis of students' knowledge of French and to introduce new structures and vocabulary. To build up confidence in all 4 skills with emphasis on speaking/listening.

What topics will we cover?

Topics: saying where you live, shopping for food, giving and asking for directions.

Grammar: present tense, prepositions, introduction to the passé composé, articles: definite/indefinite/partitive.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- talk about where you live
- buy food and say what you have bought
- give and ask for directions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Near beginners - For students who have some knowledge of French or who have completed French 1: module 1 covering units 1-3 of the French Experience 1 (BBC), new edition 2003. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Communicative teaching: emphasis on speaking and listening. Pair and group work, role-play. Audio-visual techniques including cassettes and videos when possible. Homework will be set every week and please note that students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Based on the course book The French Experience 1, (BBC) new edition 2003, units 4-6. You may want to buy the CDs with the book although this is not compulsory as the tutor will provide listening activities throughout the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; study support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
