Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to enable students to communicate more fully and accurately in French, to understand and express themselves in a wider variety of situations.

What topics will we cover?

Topics: education and work experience, physical descriptions, buying clothes and discussing the weather.

Grammar: comparatives, reflexive verbs, introduction to the future and to the imperfect, adjectives.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- talk about your educational background and work experience
- using the telephone
- describe someone
- shop for clothes
- write a short letter thanking someone
- say what you used to do.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for those who have studied French 2 lower: module 1, those who have studied at least a year of French recently or who have an equivalent knowledge of the language. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Communicative, functional approach with the emphasis on speaking and listening skills. Methods include pair practice, group and whole class work, role-play and use of audio-visual techniques, including cassettes and videos when possible. Some homework will be required each week. Please note students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Based on the course book The French Experience 1, (BBC) new edition 2003, units 13-15. You may want to buy the CDs with the book although this is not compulsory as the tutor will provide listening activities throughout the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
