Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims at giving confidence to hesitant or older learners in their language learning abilities as well as extend their basic language skills.

What topics will we cover?

Topics: hobbies, invitations, restaurant and complaints.

Grammar: modal verbs, future tense ("futur proche") and the negative.

N.B: The exact pace and progress of the class will be determined by the needs of the students.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- have more confidence in your ability to understand and be understood in simple French
- talk about your hobbies
- say what you like and dislike and why
- say what you can, want and should do
- order confidently in a restaurant.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students who have studied French 2 lower at a gentle pace: module 1 or have an equivalent knowledge. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Essentially by communicative methods, without seeking to devalue the traditional methods some students may be more familiar with. Great importance is attached to the creation of a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where everyone feels able to contribute. Maximum use of audio material, group and pair work, games and role-play as appropriate.

Please note, students are expected to take an active part in all classroom activities.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course is based on the French Experience 1 (BBC, new edition), Units 10 and 11 depending on the pace of the students. Accompanying audio material is not essential but highly recommended. Please note that the course book is a reference only and that students will not be able to cover all the activities from the book during the lesson.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; study support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
