This course will familiarise students with basic translation concepts and skills, with the aim of developing their ability to translate texts of a moderate difficulty from French into English.
The fundamentals of translation as practised by professionals, using a range of texts and exercises. Some theory but mainly practice followed by detailed discussion. Specific focus on France and the French-speaking world, including social, cultural and topical themes. Students will prepare individual reports on these topics as well as on the technicalities of written English.
-Understand the requirements of professional translation
-Evaluate the difficulties and problems posed by French-language texts intended for a general readership
-Implement appropriate problem-solving strategies when translating texts of a moderate level of difficulty
-Proofread and assess your own and other's translations.
Ideally, advanced (level 5) comprehension of written French as well as native-speaker command of English (especially written English).
Selected texts to be translated before class and discussed in detail during class. Occasional exercises on specific difficulties and techniques. Some presentation and discussion of theory.
Students should ensure that they have access to an adequate selection of reference works, notably monolingual and bilingual dictionaries.
