Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will familiarise students with basic translation concepts and skills, with the aim of developing their ability to translate texts of a moderate difficulty from French into English.

What topics will we cover?

The fundamentals of translation as practised by professionals, using a range of texts and exercises. Some theory but mainly practice followed by detailed discussion. Specific focus on France and the French-speaking world, including social, cultural and topical themes. Students will prepare individual reports on these topics as well as on the technicalities of written English.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-Understand the requirements of professional translation

-Evaluate the difficulties and problems posed by French-language texts intended for a general readership

-Implement appropriate problem-solving strategies when translating texts of a moderate level of difficulty

-Proofread and assess your own and other's translations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Ideally, advanced (level 5) comprehension of written French as well as native-speaker command of English (especially written English).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Selected texts to be translated before class and discussed in detail during class. Occasional exercises on specific difficulties and techniques. Some presentation and discussion of theory.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students should ensure that they have access to an adequate selection of reference works, notably monolingual and bilingual dictionaries.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
