To prepare students to sit the DALF C1 examination in June 2012. This is a demanding course, which requires a considerable amount of self study. Students can take the DALF C1 examination over two years if necessary.
Reading, writing, discussion and analysis of texts on specific topics related to contemporary France and French-speaking countries. Practise complex grammatical points.
- write and speak accurately and confidently about specific topics/areas
- have a very high Level of expressive style and a greatly extended vocabulary
- sit the DALF C1 examination with confidence.
An assessment interview is required for this course. Please check the website for details and book early as places are limited. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Interviews start in July. Please check the website for more details and book early as places are limited.
The course runs on Mondays with one Friday session. Course dates are as follows: Term 1: 19/09/11 - 05/12/11 (12 weeks), Term 2: 09/01/12 - 19/03/12 (11 weeks), Term 3: 16/04/12 - 18/06/12 (8 weeks).
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Examination in June 2011.
