This course will prepare you to take the exam of the Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF), A2 level, in March 2013. Suitable if you have completed DELF A1 or have equivalent knowledge. The course fee includes non-refundable exam costs payable in advance. You can pay in termly instalments. Term dates: Term 1: 20/09/2012 - 06/12/2012 (12 weeks). Term 2: 08/01/2013 - 14/03/2013 (10 weeks). and one Saturday 9 February from 10:30 to 15:00.

Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to prepare you to sit the DELF A2 examination in March 2013. It will also enable you to hold a short conversation in French in a wide range of everyday situations.

What topics will we cover?

Topics: talking about yourself and asking questions (personal info, jobs, accommodation etc); past-times (sports, going out etc); daily routine ( including work); holidays ( destinations, activities, weather, hotels, complaining etc); letters ( inviting someone, saying thank you, refusing an invitation etc); giving your opinion and discussing alternatives.

Grammar: revision of present (regular/irregular), past (passé-composé & imparfait) and future tenses, questions, negation, adjectives pronouns (direct, indirect).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-introduce and talk about yourself (present)

-ask information (questions)

-talk about future possibilities and past events

-use some basic pronouns

-talk about your pastimes

-talk about your daily routine

-talk about your holidays (and complain if necessary)

-express opinions using basic structures

-write letters.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

French 2: Lower course - This course is suitable if you have studied French for about a year recently. Interviews start from July. Please check the website for details and book early as places are limited. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Interviews start from July. Please check the website for details and book early as places are limited.
Please note: The course runs on Thursday evenings and one Saturday. Term dates: Term 1: 20/09/2012 - 006/12/11 (12 weeks). Term 2: 10/01/2013 - 14/03/1 (10 weeks).

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
