Course outline

What is the course about?

To take students to A-level standard .
To strengthen the student's knowledge, to introduce new structures and vocabulary.
To enable students to understand and respond appropriately to what they hear and read.
To give students the means to communicate in a variety of ways and for a range of purposes.
To develop the students' ability to organise their thoughts effectively in both speech and writing so that they can present an argument or express a point of view in a coherent, persuasive manner.
To help students build up confidence in all four skills with emphasis on speaking and listening.

Each module of this course will cover different topics and will contain a range of different tasks which will help you consolidate your knowledge of French (structures, vocabulary, and grammar points) and take your language to a more advanced level. Module 1 and module 2 can be taken independently but it is recommended to take the two modules.

What topics will we cover?

The course is designed to help student develop their knowledge and understanding of some issues presented in a French-speaking context such as the role and influence of the media, use and misuse of the environment, and focuses upon the major contemporary issues in France and the French-speaking world.
The course offers revision and consolidation of major areas of grammar (tenses, relative pronouns,agreement of adjectives, negation, subject and object pronouns, prepositions, demonstratives, comparison, probability, purpose); presents and practices some important language functions (asking for agreement, stating a problem,etc); creates opportunities for students to collect, practise and use key items of vocabulary relating to each topic studied; concentrates, at the discourse level, on means which permit effective use of French in narration, argument, discussion or debate.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

understand some important contemporary issues as seen through French eyes

make effective use of authentic printed and recorded material

have a surer command of language-processing skills which have an important play in everyday life

use French language to find out information and express opinions, to discuss, argue, and debate

communicate their feelings, insights and reflections in written French

produce essays, articles, and reports.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have a good intermediate level of French (studied at least to AS or A2 level in the past) and have a good grasp of grammatical structures and vocabulary. Level assesment before enrolling highly recommended. Please contact languages for advice time. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Tutors feedback during/after each classroom activity (see no.5 above)
