Course outline

What is the course about?

To develop students competence in speaking and in understanding spoken and written German at an intermediate level. To enrich vocabulary and idioms and to consolidate knowledge of grammar. To provide insight into Germany society and culture.

What topics will we cover?

Describing people’s appearance and personality, expressing impressions and opinions on people and social issues, education, jobs and career plans for the future, personal interests, entertainment and German culture.
All topics are underpinned by relevant grammatical explanations.
We will focus on the following: adjective endings with the definite, indefinite and without article, article words (dieser/mancher/jeder/alle), past tense of modal verbs, subordinate clauses (weil,obwohl,wenn), subjunctive II (present tense), reflexive verbs, verbs with accusative and dative prepositions.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-communicate orally (and in writing) with greater fluency and confidence
-demonstrate improved listening and reading skills and develop a feeling for register of speech (formal/colloquial)
-show improved confidence in dealing with daily social activities
-construct more complex sentences,
-describe people appearance and personality
-express feelings and opinions on social issues
-talk about education and jobs
-speak about personal interest and entertainment
-discuss aspects of German culture and society.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have recently studied German for at least 2 years or have completed the City Lit’s modular Programme (completed level 2 lower or Fast Track 1)
For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide, or at http://www.citylit.ac.uk/courses/Languages/74. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
