Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims to develop your writing, reading, listening and speaking skills in order to communicate effectively with German speakers at an intermediate level.

What topics will we cover?

Understanding biographies, making assumptions, describing living situation, comparing information, discussing statistics, talking about cultural aspects.
All topics are underpinned by relevant grammatical explanations.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- use vocabulary to describe towns and places, assess their better and worse sides, talk about politics and society, use the right expressions for feelings and relationship,
- understand biographies and resume dates to compose one according to life description given
- use wo +preposition, past tense, adjectives, relative clause, relative pronouns.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have studied German for about three years recently or have taken the first term of this course, or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lessons will be held in a relaxed and participative atmosphere that encourages learning.Communicative approach: emphasis on learning through listening and speaking; pair, group and whole class work including discussions, role plays and games, listening to listening to CDs. Some authentic material will be supplied by the tutor, (brochures, leaflets, extracts from magazines). Online research will be encouraged . Grammar explanations will be given where appropriate. Some authentic material (brochures, extracts from magazines, leaflets) will be supplied by the tutor. Homework will be set each week.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
