This course aims to give you an opportunity to consolidate the basic structures of Italian and then to extend your knowledge to include more complex grammatical structures and functions. You will develop the four linguistic skills with particular emphasis on spoken/conversational language.
Based on units 1 & 2 of Espresso 3 (Alma Edizioni)
Topics: asking for and giving information; description; expression of opinion; debating pros and cons; contemporary literature.
Grammar: relative pronouns; past conditional; past historic; possessive pronouns. At the beginning of term there will be revision and consolidation of grammar learnt previously.
-describe your experience/ask about learning a language
-talk about your past experiences using the "trapassato prossimo" (pluperfect)
-express an opinion using present subjunctive
-discuss advantages/disadvantages of living in town/country and in various regions
-use present and past conditional
-use a combination of personal pronouns and articles
-read a variety of texts searching for specific information
-identify when to use the past historic
-write /complete a short story using a variety of tenses (including the past historic if enough time has been devoted in class).
Stage 3 course - You should have studied Italian for at least 3 years recently or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
