Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims to give you an opportunity to consolidate the basic structures of Italian and then to extend your knowledge to include more complex grammatical structures and functions. You will develop the four linguistic skills with particular emphasis on spoken/conversational language.

What topics will we cover?

Based on units 3 & 4 of Espresso 3 (Alma Edizioni)

Topics: express doubts; complaining; description of objects; communication via e-mail and telephone; contemporary literature.

Grammar: revision of the subjunctive; the past and imperfect subjunctives; reported speech.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-describe objects (shape, material, colour, use etc.)
-express doubts using the subjunctive
-comment on the language and the imagery of advertising
-make a verbal/written complaint
-communicate via telephone, text, e-mail etc.
-be familiar with the imperfect subjunctive
-demonstrate knowledge of the different uses of direct/indirect speech.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Stage 3 course - You should have studied Italian for at least 3 years recently, and completed Italian 3 Lower: Module 1, or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
