Course outline

What is the course about?

The aim of this course is to extend your knowledge of Italian, through the close study of and discussion about an Italian work of literature each term, regular grammatical revision and occasional essays.

What topics will we cover?

These will include: the study, through reading, discussion and writing, of an author to be specified each term. Focus on grammatical structures such as: the subjunctive plus conditional moods; reported speech; the past historic and uses of other past tenses. Analysis of literary styles, sentence structures and idioms and style.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Stage 5 course - You will need to have an advanced knowledge of Italian, particularly in reading and speaking skills. No formal qualification is necessary. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Functional approach: pair and group work. Discussion, text-analysis and grammar focus will form the basis of our work in class. There will be some homework.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
