Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims to prepare you for the GCSE examination higher tier and to consolidate and extend your existing skills in Italian.

Examination board: Edexcel.

What topics will we cover?

GCSE topics: personal identification, family, pets, leisure, hobbies and entertainment, everyday activities, food and drink, health, welfare and fitness, house and home, town and local area, shopping, holidays and accommodation, school, further education and work, language and communication in workplace, the environment and society, travel and transport, public services, world events and issues, relations with others.

Grammar: emphasis on past tenses, pronouns and prepositions; understanding and limited use of some conditional and subjunctive.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-give and seek information about yourself and others
-describe your home
-describe your family and domestic routine
-express likes and dislikes
-talk about your school/education/job/future plans
-discuss hobbies/arrange leisure activities/express opinions
-find the way, give information and talk about transport
-communicate as a host or guest
-talk about holidays and holiday accommodation/make plans
-talk about food and drink: recipes, restaurants, at home
-express state of health/describe illness
-enquire about/describe goods required shopping/state preferences
-deal with problems and use services: post office, bank, lost property
-describe/comment on weather/understand basic forecasts
-make acquaintances/arrange meetings
-understand main aspects of Italian culture and society
-write/reply to a variety of letters/postcards, invitations & messages (some may be hand-written)
-read short articles/reviews in the Italian press and comment on them
-talk about environmental issues.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Stage 2 upper course - You should have attended a Stage 2 lower course or have a lower intermediate level of Italian, having studied for about 2 years. Interviews start from July. Please check the website for details and book early as places are limited. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Course material will be provided by the tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Interviews start from July. Please check the website for details and book early as places are limited.
Please note: Term 1: 22/09/11 - 08/12/11 (12 weeks). Term 2: 12/01/12 - 29/03/12 (12 weeks). Term 3: 26/04/12 - 17/05/12 (4 weeks).

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be regular homework and an examination at the end of the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
