Course outline

What is the course about?

Course which allows for the development of language skills through a course book which deals with a range of issues to do with life in Greece as well as study of literature texts. These allow for the study of social issues, geographical regions of Greece and Cyprus, 20th century Greek history and current affairs issues.

What topics will we cover?

Ellinika yia Prohorimenous, Chapters 9-12
-Looking at and analysing tables
-Reading articles and commenting on them
-Presentation using photographs of people and places in Greece
-Expressing likes and dislikes on favourite pastimes and forms of entertainment
-Discussion on the art scene in Greece
-Discussion on the Greek Consitution and parliamentary system in Greece, establishment of the Greek state
-AS and A2 exam skills
Grammar: comparatives and superlatives, expressing opinion, borrowed words from other languages.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-Translate (Greek-English, English-Greek)
-Write essays on a variety of topics
-Express opinion (oral & written)
-Make a presentation
-Analyse tables
-Discuss a wide range of topics
-Have an understanding of Greek literature and Greek social and cultural issues.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This AS and A level course is aimed at giving students the opportunity to take these exams if they wish. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
