Preparing to teach languages to adults: City & Guilds 7303

Would you like to learn how to teach foreign languages to adults and gain a nationally recognised teaching qualification? This course will introduce you to the fundamental elements of theory and practice in this field. The course runs on Thursdays and selected Fridays (11,18 Nov & 2,9 Dec). Course outline

What is the course about?

The course provides an introduction for those new to teaching and training or those wishing to teach modern foreign languages to adults. It offers a useful progression route into the City & Guilds Certificate course. The course is suitable for those who work or want to work as language teachers in adult and community education, providing they are qualified/experienced in the subject they intend to teach.

What topics will we cover?

The award includes:
Key principles of delivering learning
Learning programmes
Planning and preparing sessions, and delivery of a micro-teaching session
Reflections on learning

During the course you will cover the key principles of teaching modern foreign languages underpinning the planning, delivery, assessment and evaluation of learning and gain knowledge and experience to complete the assessment activities for the award.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate you understand why adult learning is important, and the nature of the adult learner
- Recognise your roles and responsibilities as a teacher as well as the boundaries and establishing ground rules
- Plan a Language session for adults
- Choose appropriate MFL teaching/training methods and strategies
- Select and use equipment and resources
- Teach your peers effectively in microteaching sessions
- Use an inclusive approach in your teaching

To achieve the award you will need to
- Attend 80% of the course
- Complete a successful microteaching session
- Produce a portfolio of assignments.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is taught at Level 3.
In order to get the most from this course you will need to be able to:
• Express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately, both verbally and in written English
• Research, read, comprehend and analyse text
• Write concisely, using different styles, format and structure for different purposes, applying accuracy in grammar, punctuation and spelling

Before enrolling on the course you will be asked to carry out an initial assessment to demonstrate you are ready to start studying at this level in English (minimum level 2 e.g GCSE). At interview you will also be assessed in the language you wish to teach and will be asked to provide evidence of your education and qualifications (minimum A level equivalent) .

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. To achieve the Certificate, candidates must successfully complete all the assessment activities.
You will prepare a portfolio containing examples of course work including a personal development diary, course and lesson plans, teaching materials and class observation reports and will receive regular feedback from your course tutor.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
