Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to give students basic knowledge of Portuguese, enabling them to understand how the language works and to start communicating in Portuguese in various situations.

What topics will we cover?

Portuguese grammar, colloquial and formal language, idiomatic expressions. The students will have the opportunity to develop their oral, listening comprehension, reading and writing skills.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-describe daily routine
-talk about past actions
-describe your last holidays.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable if you have completed 'Portuguese 1: module 2' or equivalent. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide, or at http://www.citylit.ac.uk/courses/Languages/74. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Communicative approach, contextualised presentation of the language, pair and group work, games for consolidation, pronunciation practice, choral and individual repetition, homework will be set, corrected and commented.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Textbook: Avenida Brasil 1, Units 6. Additional materials will be provided by the tutor.
CD for practice pronunciation will be for listening comprehension in the classroom only. No need to buy the CD.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
