This course aims to prepare students for the GCSE examination higher tier and to consolidate and extend their existing skills in Portuguese.
Examination board: OCR.
GCSE topics which include: personal identification, family, friends and relationships, pets, hobbies, daily routines and everyday activities, local area facilities and getting around, sports, healthy lifestyle, food and drinks, special occasions, festivals, weather, entertainment, tv, films and music, holidays and accommodation, environmental, cultural and social issues, school life / further education in the UK, Brazil and Portugal, work experience, jobs and working abroad.
Grammar: all main points of grammar will be studied; verb tenses with emphasis in the various past tenses; prepositions and pronouns; an introduction and basic use of the subjunctive.

Stage 2 upper course - Students should have attended a Stage 2 lower course or have a lower intermediate level of Portuguese, having studied for about 2 years. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
A notebook, pen or pencil and a Portuguese/English – English-Portuguese dictionary. Any extra materials will be provided by the tutor.

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Interviews start from July. Please check the website for details and book early as places are limited.
Please note: Term 1: 21/09/11 - 07/12/11 (12 weeks). Term 2: 11/01/12 - 21/03/12 (11 weeks). Term 3: 18/04/12 - 16/05/12 (5 weeks).
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Homework, student's self-assessment, tutor's feedback and examination.
