Course outline

What is the course about?

Discover the origins and evolution of this flamboyant Spanish gypsy art form. This lively course is suitable for Level 3 to Level 5 Spanish Language students, and will involve discussion, the viewing of live and recorded performances of baile, toque y cante (dance, guitar and song), translation of a selection of Flamenco lyrics, and the opportunity to learn the fundamental rhythmic palmas (clapping) and the all-important jaleos such as ¡Olé! - by the end of this course you will at least know what to shout out when!

What topics will we cover?

The origins and evolution of Flamenco within Spanish gypsy culture and beyond
Flamenco terminology and a selection of song lyrics
How the separate elements of a ‘Cuadro Flamenco’ (song, clapping, jaleos, guitar and dance) combine
How audience participation and improvisation take place
Opportunities in London, UK and Spain to see Flamenco performance and to learn to play guitar, sing and/or dance.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Analyse and discuss in Spanish the origins and evolution of Flamenco within Spanish gypsy culture and beyond
Describe in Spanish how the separate elements of a ‘Cuadro Flamenco’ (song, clapping, jaleos, guitar and dance) combine
Translate a selection of Flamenco song lyrics
Perform palmas and jaleos (and some basic Flamenco dance moves - optional).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for Level 3 to Level 5 Spanish Language students.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Throughout the course the tutor will offer on-going feed-back and will manage group and peer feed-back. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
