Course outline

What is the course about?

An introduction to playing the cello in a relaxed and supportive environment.

What topics will we cover?

- An introduction to the instrument including tips on general maintenance, insurance and travelling with your cello
- How to read in the Bass clef.
- How to hold the bow
- Correct position for the left hand in positions 1 and 4.
- Playing in the most natural and relaxed way taking care of your posture.
-Start developing good listening skills.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Play foundation level cello music with a good relaxed posture and correct technique in each hand
- Sight read simple Bass Clef music.
- Play in ensembles.
- Play on your own with confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for complete beginners. No knowledge is needed. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class conversation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor demonstration and as part of an ensemble. There will be both practical and theoretical class work supported by personal practice to be done at home on suggested materials. You will be required to practice of 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Apart from your own cello, bow, rosin and case you need bring nothing further to the first session. If you do not yet own a cello, they can be expensive to buy so hiring a cello could be a more affordable alternative. The tutor can provide further information regarding who to contact. The tutor will recommend music as we move along. You will need to purchase a tutor book after the first week of the course. Also bring a notebook to lessons.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
