Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an introduction to the standard works for clarinet chamber music, covering the technique and musicianship relevant to the pieces taught. Associated techniques such as finger dexterity and tone projection are taught through the use of studies and exercises. It is an enjoyable course, and it must be emphasised that you are not expected to produce perfect results every week.

What topics will we cover?

- Ensemble pieces are studied and are also presented as sight reading exercises.
- Two or three pieces are studied each term covering musical and technical aspects.
- Weekly technical exercises are set to work on breathing, tone, articulation, intonation, or the altissimo register.
- There is always discussion in class to which all the students contribute.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- be more familiar with clarinet ensemble repertoire from musical and technical perspectives
- play and perform with greater technical ability
- demonstrate an awareness of elements of good performance (musicianship/sensitivity) in an ensemble setting
- apply knowledge of new and existing techniques to clarinet playing
- perform with confidence in a group
- participate in a successful end-of-term performance.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The repertoire is, at its simplest, grade 5 upwards. We will play music from the classical period onwards, mostly trios and quartets. We will also work through studies by Demnitz. Students should have an appropriate level of technique before enrolling: a good basic sound, ability to play comfortably and fluently in the middle and chalumeau registers, with some experience of the altissimo register. Regular practice between classes is needed to gain the most from this course. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in small groups of 4-5 players, leading, counting and understanding the skills needed to work well in an ensemble setting.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students need to bring their own Bb clarinet and be willing to buy new sheet music on a regular basis.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
