To establish a basic knowledge of finger style guitar playing in different styles of music. To learn some simple improvisation techniques. To learn how to use basic music notation and learn a little about playing by ear.
Techniques including: single note playing, free stroke and rest stroke
Learning basic notation to support your playing
Learning and playing some selected scales (C, G, Am, Em, F) and arpeggio sequences (Em, Am B7)
Basic chord shapes (Em, Am, B7, E,)
Simple repertoire
An introduction to composition
Improvising short phrases
Playing simple phrases by ear
Spanish, 19th Century, South American and popular melodies.
Have a basic understanding of simple chord shapes
Be able to play a small number of chords
Play a limited number of scales - major and minor, arpeggio and chromatic scales
Be able to play repertoire learnt during the term
Write your own simple compositions based on the chords learned
Improvise a number of short phrases using a pentatonic scale
Have a basic understanding of music theory equivalent to grade 1.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Concert performance participation. Playing from music notation, if previously unfamiliar with this.
