Course outline

What is the course about?

To enable students to gain confidence in using the guitar in a free and creative way. To enlarge their knowledge of technical matters and musical styles and to broaden their guitar playing skills.

What topics will we cover?

-Effects on the guitar: pizzicato, tambora
-Playing solos and playing in ensembles
-A variety of rhythms using whole notes to semiquavers
-Scales and arpeggios
-Barres and ligado (slurring).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-Read from notation above the seventh fret
-Play 2 octave scales F, F#, G, Am, Bm
-Play a variety of solo and ensemble pieces in a range of classical styles
-Have confidence to perform in a public recital as a group.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed Classical guitar level 2, or be at an equivalent standard. You need to be able to read from notation up to the seventh fret, and to do so with a reasonable fluency. You should have a good grasp of guitar playing including playing solo pieces, ensembles, scales and arpeggios.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group and individual work, teacher demonstrations and performance, active participation in City Lit guitar recitals.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A nylon strung classical guitar will be needed as well as pen/pencil/paper and a spare set of strings.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
