What is the course about?

To study the techniques and repertoire of the string orchestra. To improve your knowledge of string playing.

What topics will we cover?

- String orchestra repertoire in suitable arrangements will be studied.
- Particular emphasis placed on: sound quality, balance, intonation and group interaction.
- Aural awareness.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- be at a good standard of orchestral playing
- have knowledge of some of the approachable string repertoire
- have better listening skills
- have gained improvement in sound, quality, balance, intonation and group interaction.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Grade 4 - 5 technical fluency needed for 1st violins, violas and cellos. 2nd violinists should be fluent in 1st and 3rd positions. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work with some demonstration.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There may be costs for hiring sets of parts from time to time (library fees).

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Continuous informal verbal feedback by the tutor.

String quartets; amateur orchestras and string quartets, which may develop from friendships within the ensemble.
