You will play various chamber music pieces selected by the tutor in a mixed group. You will experience at first hand the worlds of the composers and the colours and possibilities of various instruments. Your commitment to the course and regular attendance is essential.
- A selection of chamber music works appropriate to the abilities of the players.
- Listening skills when rehearsing and performing chamber music works.
- How to practise efficiently in order to achieve a good performance.
- play and perform with an improved sense of rhythm
- play with a better sense of phrasing and timbre
- play with a better sense of colouring and timbre
- react more sensitively with other players in a chamber music ensemble
- understand in detail the stylistic features of pieces studied and performed in class
- identify the characteristics of different instruments
- perform to other students and friends.
You should have the technical ability of Grade 6 and above and a good sense of rhythm as well as good sight-reading skills. Please prepare a suitable piece that you will play in an advice session. You will need to be tolerant of other students in the group and receptive to tutor feedback. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
Group tutoring every week. Approximately half an hour of tutoring each session. You will be required to practise in between sessions.
Where possible students supply their own music and instruments apart from the pianoforte. The City Lit has a well-stocked music library.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Players perform to each other at the end of the term.

Playing in chamber music is one of the best ways to advance your technical and imaginative capabilities. Players then often work independently with other City Lit musicians.
