Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an introduction to the solo and ensemble repertoire. Technique, articulation, musicianship and tone quality are taught with jazz and classical pieces.

What topics will we cover?

The course will cover all aspects of clarinet technique - breathing, articulation, fingering, tone etc - to approximately grade 4 standard. The art of interpretation will be developed, and we will explore a variety of repertoire - solo and ensemble - in a variety of styles.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- have improved all aspects of clarinet technique
- have learnt how to interpret a variety of music
- have improved reading skills
- have learnt the art of ensemble playing
- have improved confidence in simple improvisation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have had at least 3 to 4 years playing experience and should be at ease with note-reading and some very simple improvisation. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor demonstration. Ensemble playing. Some solo playing.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students need their own Bb clarinet. Course materials will be supplied.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will also be end-of-term concerts. You will be advised before enrolling on level 4.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
