Course outline

What is the course about?

You will learn how to make your first sounds on the flute, then different notes and tunes. You will also learn to read music with greater ease and understanding. By the end of the year you will have acquired basic flute technique, and be able to play middle and high notes in the low register.

What topics will we cover?

- First sounds on the head joint; embouchure; control of the air stream; note bending; improvement of tone; awareness of posture and breathing; articulation - tonguing and slurring.
- How to read music - pitch and rhythm; forming notes into tunes; some memorising and basic improvising.
- Developing musical phrasing, dynamics and expression. Expanding musical theory and musicianship. Extending repertoire in different musical styles.
- Introduction to major and minor scales and arpeggios.
- Introduction to harmonics and vibrato.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- demonstrate the basics of flute technique e.g. embouchure, breathing, tone, tuning
- articulate the notes by 'tonguing' and 'slurring'
- play two octaves of notes with good finger technique
- read music with basic confidence
- play rhythmically and in tune
- have improved musicianship and general knowledge of music theory
- have improved skills in listening, improvising, sight-reading and memorising.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge or experience is needed. The course is for complete beginners and for those who have made a start but want to go back to basics. You do not already need to read music as this will be taught whilst learning to play. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work, playing in unison and in two and three parts. Playing individually. Demonstrations by tutor. Listening to flute recordings.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students need their own flute. Some music will need to be bought / borrowed from a library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be individual and group playing through of pieces learned; and an end-of-term concert.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
