Course outline

What is the course about?

A chance to expand your flute-playing skills and musical understanding, and gain confidence and enjoyment through progression in your abilities.

What topics will we cover?

- Continuation and development of areas covered in the level 1 course, i.e. tone, technique, articulation, intonation, embouchure, breathing, phrasing, dynamics and rhythm.
- Extending the range of notes to three octaves
- Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to four sharps and flats
-Chromatic scales
-Increasing aural perception
- Developing ability to improvise, sight-read and memorise, learning new techniques e.g. double tonguing, flutter tonguing and glissandi, working on ornamentation such as trills and mordents, gaining further understanding of musical theory, style and context through expanding repertoire of different musical styles and cultures.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- play a three-octave range of notes with more developed tone and tuning
- play with improved articulation, finger technique, breath control and greater understanding of the embouchure
- play with increased understanding of musical theory, style and context
- play with developed sense of rhythm
- demonstrate simple skills in the reading of music notation
- demonstrate skills in listening, improvising, sight-reading and memorising
- have achieved an integrated understanding of the above practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have had at least one year's flute study, either through City Lit level 1 course or other tuition. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work, playing in unison and in two, three and four parts. Individuals will play to the group and with with piano accompaniment. There will be demonstrations by tutor and we will listen to flute recordings.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Some music will need to be purchased (approx. £8-£10 per term). Music may be borrowed from the City Lit library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be end-of-term concerts.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
