Course outline

What is the course about?

You will expand your flute-playing skills and musical understanding, gaining confidence and enoyment through progression in your abilities as a flautist.

What topics will we cover?

- continuation and development of all previous learning, i.e. tone, technique, articulation, embouchure, breathing, phrasing, dynamics, vibrato and posture
- aural perception, improvisation, sight-reading, memorisation, musical interpretation
- musical theory and style through a varied repertoire
- playing a work with students from the string quartet classes e.g. Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 5
- performance skills (solo with piano, and in ensemble, in class and concert situations, coaching with class pianist).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- play with a more developed tone, tuning and expressive range
- show improved articulation, breath control and a more flexible embouchure
- demonstrate a more developed sense of rhythm, better sight reading and practice methods
- show improved listening skills, improvising and memory skills
- show improved finger technique and scales
- show improved reading music notation and general musicianship
- perform a range of repertoire with piano accompaniment and participate in ensemble pieces with greater confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have at least two years' playing experience and have reached a standard of approximately grade 3-4. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught as a group, playing together and in 2, 3 or 4 parts as well as solo. You will have the opportunity to play with the class pianist and receive individual coaching. Teaching is through demonstration, listening to other students, class discussion and listening to flute recordings. You will need to practise flute between classes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to buy course music - advice will be given by the tutor. Most ensemble music will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. End-of-term concerts, where students can play solo and in ensemble, are a way of recognising achievements and progress through time.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
