Course outline

What is the course about?

Expanding your flute-playing skills and musical understanding, and gaining confidence and enjoyment through progression in your abilities.

What topics will we cover?

- Continuation and development of all previous learning i.e. tone, technique, articulation, intonation, embouchure, breathing, phrasing, dynamics, vibrato, posture, etc.
- Increasing aural perception, developing your ability to improvise, sight-read and memorise, extending technique and musical interpretation.
- Jazz improvisation.
- Gaining further understanding of musical theory, style and context through expanding repertoire of varied music
- Opportunities to play in concerts at City Lit and at external venues.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- demonstrate an integrated understanding of the above practical skills and theoretical knowledge
- show a more developed tone and tuning
- have improved articulation, finger technique, breath control and greater understanding of the embouchure
- have increased musicianship, sense of interpretation and performance practice
- have a more developed sense of rhythm; improved skills in listening, improvising, sight-reading and memorising
- have improved reading of music notation
- have a broader knowledge of flute repertoire
- have gained more experience of playing solo, with piano accompaniment and in ensemble; more developed practice methods.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have at least 3-4 years playing experience and reached a standard of Grade 5 or above. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work, playing in unison and in parts as well as solo, with piano accompaniment. There will be demonstrations by the tutor and an opportunity to play with the class pianist. You will engage in class discussion and be encouraged to listening to flute recordings. You will be expected to practise flute between lessons.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A variety of music will be covered which students will need to buy. Ensemble music is provided. Details of repertoire will be available from the tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. End-of-term concerts where students can play solo and in ensemble are a way of recognising achievements and progress through time.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
