Course outline

What is the course about?

A chance to further develop your recorder ensemble playing skills and technique if you already have experience playing instruments of the recorder family. This takes place within a friendly group.

What topics will we cover?

-Devoloping increased technical fluency on the recorder
-Becoming comfortable with playing different instruments of the recorder family
-Exploring an eclectic range of ensemble skills
-Playing a range of ensemble repertoire.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- comfortably play a variety of sizes of recorders in an ensemble scenario
- enjoy an improved technical level on the recorder.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at those who already have experience of recorder ensemble playing, but who are interested in exploring new repertoire and further advancing of their technique. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical work, playing consorts and listening. Scales and exercises. Duets and ensemble pieces. Sight reading and learning pieces with a view to performance. Group, small group and individual work; group discussion; demonstration by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring a recorder. Exercises and teaching material will be given on sheets. You can borrow, and may wish to buy, the solo or consort music being studied. You will need to buy 'The Daily Lesson' by Hans Ulrich Staeps (Universal Edition, UE 12614).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
