You will develop all the techniques of violin/viola playing at an intermediate to advanced level.
Improving sound quality by developing basic bow strokes. We shall study 2nd and 4th positions, vibrato (starting or developing) listening skills for ensemble playing, and aural awareness (especially of intervals for tuning and note finding).
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- Use vibrato in pieces
- Read notation and play pieces in 2nd position
- Read notation and play pieces in 4th position
- Bowing techniques
- Related theory
- Work on individual problems
- Scales and arpeggios based on the Grade 4 syllabus.
You should be fluent in 1st and 3rd positions and familiar with major and minor scales in 2 octaves with slurred and separate bowing patterns. You need a playing standard of approximately Grade 3-4 and you should be able to tune your instrument independently and read music. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
The tutor will direct the group - sometimes dividing into sub-groups for part-playing and listening. We shall use printed music, whiteboard, piano accompaniment and very simple playing by ear. Individual practice 4 or 5 times a week of at least 40 minutes will ensure your progress.
- You will need your own violin or viola costing about £70 or more.
- A folder for handouts and your notes is useful.
- You will need: pen, pencil, eraser, notepad and music paper.
- We will use up to 3 textbooks during costing about £5 to £15 each.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will get continuous feedback from the tutor and an opportunity to test your skills at end of term performances.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
