This course will help you improve your technique and listening skills for ensemble and solo playing.
- Posture and movement.
- Sound production for bow and left hand.
- Intonation
- Listening for ensemble playing.
- Positions – all 7 and fingering.
- Listen analytically
- Change position
- Select good fingering
- Use vibrato
- Use the bow effectively.
- The class is useful for players of about grade 4 to 6 standard.
- You should be reasonably fluent playing and reading music in 1st and
3rd position.
- We work as an ensemble with a piano accompanist while the tutor directs, conducts and demonstrates.
- We discuss technical points and try them out, sometimes as smaller groups within the class.
- You will benefit most if you can practise and play at home for at least 20 minutes, 3 or 4 times a week.
- You will need your own violin or viola.
- The tutor provides most of the music.
- You may be asked to buy music from time to time – up to £10 a term.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You must bring your instrument to the advisory interview and a piece to play. You may like to bring music that you are learning although this is not essential.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Participating in formal and informal concerts. Auditioning for local groups and orchestras. Regular tutor feedback, peer and self-assessment.
