You will learn the basics of violin playing, including reading music notation, theory and tuning your violin.
- Posture and movement.
- Rhythm.
- Reading and writing music.
- Sound production for bow and left hand.
- Listening for tuning and playing.
- Patterns of notes that allow you to play simple tunes.
- Manage the violin and bow.
- Tune your violin.
- Know the sound and structure of major scales.
- Read and improvise simple tunes and rhythms.
You are expected to be a complete beginner, so you do not need any previous knowledge of music or playing an instrument.
We work as a group with some individual attention from the tutor and frequent division into smaller groups. The tutor leads the class by explaining, demonstrating and playing with the group. You will make good progress if you play and practice at home for at least 15 minutes 4 or 5 times a week.
- You will need your own violin or viola costing about £70 or more.
- A folder for handouts and your notes is useful.
- You will need: pen, pencil, eraser, notepad and music paper.
- We will use 2 textbooks during the year costing about £10 each.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. The tutor gives constant verbal feedback and you assess your own progress in conversation with the tutor from time to time.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
