Course outline

What is the course about?

You will learn to play and read music in 3rd position. You will develop your musical and technical skills through a selection of repertoire, scales and exercises. There will be an exploration of how your body works in playing. You will gain experience of playing independent lines in a group situation.

What topics will we cover?

- Tuning the instrument and playing in tune
- Scales and arpeggios in major and minor keys, based on the Grade 3 syllabus
- Playing in 3rd position; reading music in 3rd position; shifting between 1st and 3rd position
- Preparation and interpretation of musical works
- Bowing techniques
- Related theory
- Work on individual problems.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Play proficiently in both 1st and 3rd positions
- Use the bow with greater skill and control
- Understand major and minor (harmonic and melodic) scale patterns
- Have confidence to join an elementary orchestra or chamber music group.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course starts at approximately Grade 2 level. You will need the ability to read musical notation and a fluent knowledge of 1st position. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The tutor will direct the group, either playing all together or dividing into sub-groups for part-playing and listening. There will be demonstration and occasional use of recording. We shall use printed music principally, with some playing by ear. Individual practice inbetween sessions will be key to your progress.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring a violin or viola and a bow in good working order. You will also need a pencil and rubber. You will need to buy sheet music and will be advised by the tutor. A metronome will be helpful with some of the homework. You will also need your own violin or viola - costing about £100 and 2 books of music to start the course costing between £8 and £10 each. You may want to wait until the first class for advice from the tutor before buying your instrument.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. You will be required to bring a piece and your own instrument to an advice session.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Individuals may wish to take a public graded exam - Grade 3, which will be supported by the tutor although not part of the course. Participation in occasional City Lit public concerts and events. Regular tutor feedback, peer and self-assessment.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
