Course outline

What is the course about?

You will develop your violin/viola playing skills up to Associated Board Grade 5 standard, including the knowledge and skills needed for those who wish to take the Associated Board Grade 5 Examination in the summer term.

What topics will we cover?

- Repertoire for the Grade 5 examination and other repertoire of a similar standard
- Scales/Arpeggios for the Grade 5 syllabus enabling students who wish to work towards the exam, but also furthering overall development in their grasp of the instrument
- Continuing the work from level 4 in 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions, as well as introducing 5th and 6th positions
- Development of greater proficiency in shifting between the various positions
- Vibrato - which was introduced in Level 4 - including greater application in repertoire as appropriate
- Sound projection and bow control, as well as appropriate types of bowing for different repertoire
- Sight-reading - whether individual or in a group.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Play pieces of Grade 5 standard
- Show fluency in scales and shifting up to and including 5th position, as well as applying this fluency in piece
- Apply vibrato as appropriate in different pieces
- Show knowledge and grasp of different types of bowing to the standard appropriate for the repertoire covered.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course will follow on from level 4. The skills required to start the course will include being able to play pieces and scales to approximately Grade 4 standard even if you have not taken the Grade 4 exam. Students should also show a similar proficiency in sight-reading, as well as some grasp of vibrato and work in higher positions up to and including 4th position.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn as part of a group with individual performances to the class as appropriate, together with the opportunity for shared feedback. Work outside the class will consist of regular individual practice at home, including pieces and scales - also bowing, position changing and vibrato exercises as directed by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will be asked to buy pieces and scales for Grade 5 as well as occasionally throughout the course other repertoire and study books deemed appropriate by the tutor. There will also be the entry fee for those wishing to take the exam in the summer term. You will also need your own violin or viola - costing about £100 and 2 books of music to start the course costing between £8 and £10 each. You may want to wait until the first class for advice from the tutor before buying your instrument.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
