Course outline

What is the course about?

This short course aims to clarify and develop the role of the electric bass guitar in jazz and popular music. Bring your bass guitar and a jack lead. We will explore the rhythmic and harmonic roles through the study and playing of a wide variety of contemporary standard grooves, using essential musical shapes.

What topics will we cover?

- Playing technique: left and right hand
- Reading the bass clef
- Practice scales, triads, and other patterns and use these to create interesting basslines and to improvise.
- Improve your sense of pulse and keep good time e.g. playing with a click, or CD backing
- Play music in various styles: swing jazz, blues, rock, funk, R & B, soul, samba, reggae, bossa nova.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Enhance your understanding of bass playing
- Build confidence about how and what to play
- Shape a practice routine
- Improve your technique
- Meet other bass players.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For players with some experience, a reasonable understanding of the instrument, technically and musically and beyond the level of Bass Guitar 1 course. This would include the ability to play along with a variety of chord sequences and read music.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring your bass, manuscript, pencil. Some amplification will be provided. Music materials will be provided by the tutor.
