Course outline

What is the course about?

Develop playing skills acquired in level 2. Our focus will be to build a technical skill base, reading ability and stylistic authenticity whilst playing a range of contemporary rock, jazz, funk and world grooves.

What topics will we cover?

- The establishment of a good practice routine
- Develop coordinated jazz style and independence
- Study of contemporary rock, jazz, funk, and world music styles
- Interpretation and playing jazz and rock charts
- Brushwork
- Prepare for Trinity Grade 3 and 4 exams
- Improve stick control through sound understanding and application rudiments.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Develop and sustain a sound practice routine away from class
- Be able to creatively apply rudimental technique to the drum set
- Play different styles with the correct 'feel'
- Successfully and accurately play drum charts
- Successfully take Trinity grade exams
- Be a credible member of a band or ensemble.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For players who have successfully completed Drumming level 2, and others who have an equivalent level of competence (to be demonstrated at audition).
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Learning as a group, using 2 or 3 kits and practice pads; tutor demonstrations; listen to and discuss recorded samples; playing together, and solo; learning grooves by ear and from notation; as much individual tuition as numbers allow. Mostly we will play as an ensemble, sometimes for a sustained period. E-learning available.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your own sticks, a notebook, and a machine to record parts of your class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Enrolment subject to successful audition.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will have the opportunity of a short tutorial each term.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
