Course outline

What is the course about?

To enable students to play a variety of songs and basic scales and to develop chord construction, smooth changes and rhythmic ability.

What topics will we cover?

- students will be taught to play and develop a repertoire of songs in styles such as blues, pop, folk and Latin.
- students can also expect to receive guidance on song structure and arrangement.
- musicianship relevant to pop songs and the acoustic guitar.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- play in a wide range of keys
- play chords up to the 7th with some extensions
- play basic scales in transposable form
- have learned a repertoire of songs
- be confident about tackling new music
- be more self-sufficient/independent.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed level one or have equivalent experience, at least a year of guitar study: hand shapes for the most used chords e.g. E, Em, G, C, A7, Am7, etc., simple bar chords, basic strumming and picking, etc.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Playing together, tutor demonstration and instruction, practising songs, warm-ups and ensemble playing.
Practice between classes will be essential if you are to keep abreast of the course and derive full benefit.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Music materials will be supplied by the tutor. You will bring your own acoustic instrument and a folder for your music sheets and handouts.
You may record parts of class if you wish.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Continuous assessment by the tutor during the class.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
