Learn to play and improvise over a variety of jazz tunes with confidence in your aural skills (hearing what you are going to play) and with a good understanding of harmonic structures (chords) and time feel (swing and latin).
- Rhythm: pulse, groove, off beats, groupings, cross rhythms, different time signatures
- Melody: intervals, major scale and modes, blues scale, and harmonic minor scale
- Phrasing: use of space, call and response, articulation, dynamics
- Harmony: triads, inversions, 7th chords, notation, chord scale relationships
- Repertoire: 4or 5 tunes each term drawn from a wide range of jazz, Latin and contemporary styles
- The requirements of modules that comprise a level 2 NOCN qualification.
- learn to function in the context of an ensemble.
- Understand and use major scale in diatonic sequences
- Understand and use blues scale in blues sequences
- Understand and use chords I - VII from major scale
- Understand and use the minor II-V-I sequence.
- Understand and play in Latin and swing time.
You should already understand basic harmony (triads, major and minor scale construction); be able to read and write music; be at a good standard on their instrument or voice, and capable of expressing musical ideas.
Minimum playing standard is to be able to play all 12 major and relative minor scales.
N.b. This course is accredited by NOCN at level 2. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English and staff notation.
There will be lots of playing, singing, clapping, ear training and listening to recorded examples. You will play in small groups and as a whole class, and complete some music writing assignments. There will also be some interactive lecture-style teaching with frequent opportunities for discussion.There will be regular opportunities to perform.
Please must bring your instrument and manuscript every week, and build up a course file.
Additional reading or internet research may be suggested as the course progresses.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will also receive feedback through tutor and peer assessment of in-class performances and departmental concerts. There will also be an informal review and/or tutorial each term.

At the end of the course you can progress onto Jazz course year 2, or other intermediate jazz courses at City Lit. You will also be ready to take part in jam sessions and gigs or even form your own band.
