Course outline

What is the course about?

You will be introduced to the essentials of playing in the jazz style. Advanced chord work and scales are explored within the context of jazz and blues standards.

What topics will we cover?

Tunes for study are chosen in order to highlight a particular aspect of jazz guitar technique:
- Scales/modes
- Chords and chord shapes
- Improvisation
- Melody playing
- Harmonisation and substitutions
- Playing in various time feels
- Solo chord playing
- Creating a bassline.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate a grasp of important jazz scales and use them to improvise over chords
- Demonstrate some jazz repertoire
- Reharmonise chord progressions using substitutions
- Attempt personal interpretations of music
- Play in time with a good sense of jazz style.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be fully conversant with bar chords; know the names of all notes on the fingerboard to at least the seventh fret and have a good grasp of basic chord progressions. Music reading, or tab reading will be of advantage. It is recommended that jazz instrumental study is supported by harmony study and ear training.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through group playing sessions with opportunity for individual attention and guidance. Daily practice outside of class is an essential supplement to this course. Reading music notation is not essential but will be helpful. As amplification is limited, please bring an acoustic instrument until advised differently by your tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Music materials are provided by the tutor. You must bring your own acoustic guitar, and you may wish to record parts of the sessions. A guitar tuner is essential, pencil and manuscript paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be ample opportunity for feedback from the tutor and your classmates. In-class presentation.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
