What topics will we cover?

- Understanding the different forms of jazz sequences
- Developing rhythmic and melodic awareness
- Studying bass line movement and simple voice-leading
- Choosing scale options (modes of major scale, pentatonics and harmonic minor)
- ‘Jam’ sessions to put the above in context.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Recognise different forms of jazz composition, common harmonic progressions, and chord types
- Write down simple jazz rhythms and melodies
- Understand how scales and chords relate to one another
- Improvise/compose competently.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have a good working knowledge of scales, triads and notation is required. Also good instrumental proficiency and familiarity with the jazz idiom. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and take notes in English and staff notation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn through group listening, discussion and singing of relevant parts, class exercises (dictation and chord recognition), theory and performance sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Lionel Grigson Practical Jazz (Stainer and Bell) recommended. Mark Levine Jazz Theory Book (Chuck Sher) optional. You will be asked to bring your instrument to some sessions.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will also be the opportunity for regular discussion with the tutor.
