Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn to play and improvise over intermediate level standards in swing and Latin syles. Develop the strategies covered in jazz piano 1, and expand your repertoire of tunes.

What topics will we cover?

- Essential playing material that is 24-32 bars in length
- More harmonically interesting chord changes in turnarounds
- Modal tunes and modal playing
- Approaches to improvising
- How to practise; what to practise.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Play regular standard tunes in major/relative minor keys
- Solo over this type of standard
- Build intros, create basslines
- Comp (accompany) effectively
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of how to play in swing and latin time.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed Jazz piano1 or have intermediate playing skills (grade 5 minimum), experience of listening to jazz piano and the ability to understand and interpret chord changes in standards. Confidence in your use of scales and modes.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through tutorial input with appropriate individual help / advice and practising to rhythm section backing tapes. Mostly you will play as a group, and practice at a digital piano.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring manuscript paper and a pencil and a machine to record class if you wish.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Continuous informal verbal feedback from tutor and peers as you take part in class activity & presentations.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
