Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn to play standards with demanding harmonic, rhythmic and melodic issues. Consolidate and develop the work covered in Jazz piano 1 and 2. Improvise with confidence.

What topics will we cover?

- The role of the piano in a rhythm section, and as a solo instrument
- Playing standards that include minor/altered harmony, substitutions, reharmonisation, modal harmony
- Developing your ability to improvise on the study tunes
- You will be required to learn a standard tune every 2/3 weeks.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Improve your sense of time, and range of grooves
- Build confidence to play in public
- Read charts effectively; memorise tunes quickly
- Expand your repertoire
- 'Comp' as part of a rhythm section
- Build and play solos
- Become a reliable accompanist.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have an intermediate to advanced level of piano skill. You should have successfully completed jazz piano 2, or have alternative playing experience that has given you confidence and know-how in the use of scales and modes, patterns, and common jazz chord progressions.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We play together in class, at digital pianos. Tutorial input on aural and theoretical matters, and some demonstration.
There will be some solo playing, and duets where one player features and the other accompanies.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring manuscript for class notes, and a machine to record, if you wish.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Regular verbal feedback from your tutor, and classmates.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can progress onto year 1/2/3 of the jazz course, gigs and jam sessions, or even your own band or duo.
