Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a follow-on course to the level 1 workshop, although it is also suitable for others working at an equivalent level. It will be performance orientated and you will have the opportunity to explore in greater depth style, phrasing, interpretation and presentation.

What topics will we cover?

- continued work on breath control and vocal technique
- ear training and music theory relevant to the demands of the repertoire
- learn repertoire including bebop and vocalese
- solo singing of jazz repertoire
- phrasing, feel, vocal style, interpretation and delivery of a song
- microphone technique and presentation skills.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- demonstrate good vocal technique
- sing solo to your class (and elsewhere…)
- communicate with the accompanist/band
- use a microphone with confidence
- improve your timing, phrasing, feel and delivery
- show better aural and theoretical understanding of music
- know your range and work out suitable keys for your songs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You are expected to have completed 'Jazz singers' workshop 1', or demonstrate at audition equivalent experience and ability. You will have a good understanding of this kind of music, and a sound singing technique. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Student-centred group learning. Warm up and technical exercises. Demonstration by tutor, and/or sample cd's. Solo performance and constructive criticism from your tutor and peers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The tutor will provide songs for study, but in order to meet your own expectations you are encouraged to bring songs of your own choice. You will therefore need occasionally to buy sheet music. Please bring a notepad, and a machine to record parts of your class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be occasional opportunities to participate in formal college gigs.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Jazz vocal improvisation.
