Course outline

What is the course about?

To produce a strong, supported singing voice, develop your ability to improvise and gain confidence in performance as a soloist or within a group. You will expand your repertoire, and develop skills learnt in level 1.

What topics will we cover?

- Exploring the jazz repertoire
- Exploring the full range of the human voice
- Understanding and expressing lyrics
- Study of rhythm in order to keep tempo steady and phrasing interesting
- Studying arrangements and harmony within the songs.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- show that you have extended your vocal range and flexibility, expertise and confidence
- show that you have learned the value of listening and singing as a way of life
- work with a group/work solo
- use new repertoire and explore new areas of music
- know what and how to practise
- perform solo and respond to feedback.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be familiar with the jazz idiom, and will have completed 'Jazz singing 1' or have had six months or more of similar tuition or training. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Warm-ups, breathing exercises, technical vocal exercises, learning and sharing songs. Singing together in class, and solo presentation. Listening, giving and receiving constructive criticism. You will learn how to maintain songs in performance; choosing the song; discussion; stage fright; mic technique; song arrangement, counting and song interpretation.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your own personal repertoire, music sheets and photocopies for musicians, and a folder. You may record the classes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Students perform solos and are assessed informally week by week. There will be occasional opportunities to perform outside of class.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Workshop level class. Open mic sessions.
