What is the course about?

Learn to play styles of Latin piano with particular emphasis on Afro-Cuban music.

What topics will we cover?

- The use of clavé in Latin music, salsa, guajira, son montuno, and bolero
- Playing samples of these styles at digital pianos
- Approaches to soloing in this style will be a feature of the course.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Show an understanding of different styles and the rhythms that make them work
- Play montuno patterns
- Demonstrate strategies for practising and investigating the music
- Enjoy improved coordination in your playing
- Expand your listening to Latin music.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For students with pop piano and jazz training, or solid classical skill, who read music and chord symbols and understand how to play in contemporary styles. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught at digital pianos, playing mixed with listening, reading musical examples, clapping rhythms, playing percussion and some discussion. Books and resources for researching the music will be suggested.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Music will be provided. Tutor will also suggest sources for reading and listening. Bring a machine to record class if you wish.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Playing together in class, and some solo work. Feedback from your tutor.
