Explore styles of Latin piano playing with particular emphasis on Afro-Cuban music. You will be able to play digital pianos and percussion in class.
- The use of clavé in Latin music, salsa, guajira, son montuno, and bolero
- Approaches to soloing in this style
- Playing montuno figures, and associated percussion.
- Show an understanding of common styles and the rhythms that make them work
- Play montuno patterns
- Demonstrate strategies for practising and investigating the music
- Enjoy improved coordination in your playing.
Ideal for students with pop piano training, or a good facility at the piano, who read music and understand how to play in contemporary styles, i.e. interpreting chord symbols at the piano. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
You will be taught at digital pianos, playing mixed with listening, reading musical examples, clapping rhythms, playing percussion and some discussion.
Materials will be provided. Tutor will also suggest sources for reading and listening. Bring a machine to record class if you wish.
